My mother found this in my father’s drawer… Is
this what I’ve always feared?

My mother found it by chance.

She wasn’t snooping—at least not at first. She was looking for documents, something common that could explain her father’s recent absences and strange behavior. Instead, she opened a drawer she’d never touched before and found an object that immediately disturbed her.

The moment she saw him, a familiar fear resurfaced—a fear she had carried silently for years, never giving it a name.

Nothing had ever been said aloud before.

There were no accusations, no complaints, no confrontations. Just small observations that never made much sense: the way my father shrank when handling his “things,” how his face paled, his posture hunched inward, as if he were only partially present—like someone who is there simply because a ritual demands it.

The box had always been there.

Locked away. Hidden in a storage room he rarely used. No one ever asked what was inside—not me, not my mother. Even she—his wife—had learned long ago not to question certain boundaries.

But on that day, something was different.
