While scientists regularly find things in the ice, it is rarer to come across mammoths! Recently, researchers came face to face with a specimen whose brain was extracted intact and could be examined.
This mammoth brain, unearthed from the permafrost (frozen ground), has been dated: this specimen is 39,000 years old! Scientists were able to discover that the mammoth was a child aged 6 to 9 years and did not survive the extreme conditions that were the norm at the time.
